Assistant Controller | VC Backed Med-Device Business | Post Series C

Harmonic is excited to be working with one of the fastest growing Medical Device businesses. Focused on utilizing the advancements in next generation technology, this company is creating clinical grade wearables to address some of the leading causes of sudden death. This businesses is blazing a trail for personalized digital devices that will be able to prevent some of the most common sudden and lethal health episodes.

Venture backed by a number of the most prominent VC's in the life science and technology spaces, this company is rapidly growing and entering an exciting inflection point in their development.

The Role:

Reporting into the VP of Finance, this role will build and lead the internal accounting function. Responsible for scaling the accounting function and maintaining compliance, this position will implement internal controls and design an infrastructure that will be able to support their projected rapid expansion.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee accounting operations, including cash management, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accounts payable, payroll, and tax compliance
  • Lead the implementation of an enterprise accounting system, ensuring alignment with financial reporting need
  • Develop and refine accounting processes and policies for better internal controls and compliance
  • Ensure accuracy of financial records, focusing on inventory costs and their impact
  • Maintain high standards in financial transactions and reporting
  • Prepare and present monthly financial statements for strategic decision-making
  • Manage external reporting and address technical accounting compliance
  • Ensure adherence to all local, state, and federal reporting requirements
  • Hire and mentor a team of accounting professionals as the organization expands
  • Oversee the expense reporting process for compliance and timely reimbursements
  • Implement comprehensive accounting policies for operational efficiency
  • Conduct analyses to establish financial thresholds aligned with growth
  • Provide insights for strategic decisions based on risk assessment
  • Collaborate on automating payroll and benefits systems for improved accuracy
  • Manage stock option grants and related expenses
  • Oversee vendor relationships and financial systems integration
  • Manage the Fixed Assets module for accurate tracking and reporting
  • Perform additional accounting tasks as needed in a startup environment

What We Need (Skills & Experience):

  • Over 10 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, particularly in leadership roles within dynamic organizations or startups
  • Strong background in privately held companies in sectors such as medical devices, life sciences, or technology
  • Comprehensive understanding of accounting principles and practices
  • Proficient in general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end closing processes
  • Familiar with enterprise accounting software, including QuickBooks Enterprise, and financial reporting tools, with hands-on experience in managing complex financial operations
  • Proven ability to recruit, lead, and develop accounting and finance teams
  • Effective in collaborating with various departments, including operations, legal, and senior leadership, to align financial operations with business goals
  • Adaptable to fast-paced, evolving environments with a wide range of responsibilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred
  • CPA certification or significant progress toward obtaining it is a plus
